Since the boom of wind energy in the second half of the 80s´
one deals more intensively with the arithmetical methods for
the determination of wind energy yields. During this period
the analyses model windatlas including the software WAsP was
developed by the Danish research laboratory RISØ in the
context of a project for the European Community.
The software WAsP, developed for the realization of the
windatlas method, is used for the determination of wind
potential at possible locations for a wind farm. According to
the windatlas method the influences due to obstacles and
roughness as well as orography will be computed. Generally the
obstacle admission takes place in a periphery of at least 1,2
km around each WEC location; the radius for the orography
model amounts to 10 km around each WEC location and the radius
for the roughness model to 25 km.
Based on the same model WAsP can also be used in order to
eliminate area influences out of an existing wind measurement.
Therefore it is possible to produce a windatlas for a special
region out of a wind measurement. Since its beginning the
program has been developed further considerably. In particular
the ability to convert complex orography data was enlarged
considerably.
